What is PCOD and PCOS | A Comprehensive Ayurvedic Perspective

Overview:

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and Polycystic Ovary Disorder (PCOD) are two common hormonal disorders that affect millions of women worldwide. These conditions can cause a range of symptoms, including irregular periods, infertility, weight gain, and acne. While there are conventional treatments available, many women are turning to Ayurveda for a more holistic and natural approach to managing their symptoms. Ayurveda, an ancient Indian medical system, offers a comprehensive perspective on PCOS and PCOD, focusing on balancing the body and promoting overall well-being. In this blog, we will delve into Ayurvedic principles and practices for understanding and managing PCOS and PCOD, including the use of helpful top most Ayurvedic medicines like MeninstaCare Forte Capsule.

What is PCOD and PCOS: A Comprehensive Ayurvedic Perspective

What is PCOD / PCOS?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that affects the hormone levels in women during their reproductive years. PCOS is characterized by a combination of hormonal imbalances and genetic tendencies. It can lead to various symptoms such as irregular menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne, and infertility. One of the key features of PCOS is the presence of small cysts or follicles on the ovaries. PCOD, or Polycystic Ovarian Disease, is a term often used interchangeably with PCOS. However, there is a slight difference between the two. In PCOD, the ovaries produce an excess amount of androgens, which results in the formation of small cysts or follicles.

On the other hand, PCOS is primarily a result of insulin resistance and high levels of insulin, which can cause the ovaries to produce more androgens. It is believed that hormonal imbalances and genetics play an essential role in both PCOS and PCOD. High levels of androgens in the body can prevent the ovaries from producing hormones and producing eggs normally, leading to fertility issues. Treatment for PCOS depends on various factors, including whether the individual wishes to become pregnant. Lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy weight, can help manage the symptoms of PCOS. Medical interventions, such as hormonal contraceptives or medications to regulate blood sugar levels, may also be prescribed depending on the specific needs of the individual.

In Ayurveda, PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) and PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) are both reproductive disorders that affect women. According to Ayurveda, these conditions are primarily caused by an imbalance in the doshas (energetic forces) and a buildup of toxins. PCOD is characterized by the formation of multiple cysts on the ovaries, which affects their normal functioning. Ayurveda considers PCOD to be caused by an excessive accumulation of Kapha dosha and an imbalance in Vata and Pitta doshas. This condition is believed to result from poor diet and lifestyle habits, such as excessive consumption of sweet, fatty, and cold foods, lack of exercise, and irregular daily routines. PCOS, on the other hand, is a more advanced stage of PCOD.

In addition to the cysts on the ovaries, women with PCOS experience hormonal imbalances, irregular periods, weight gain, and other symptoms. Ayurveda attributes PCOS to an imbalance in all three doshas, with the aggravation of Kapha and Pitta primarily contributing to this condition. The accumulation of toxins (ama) in the body and impaired digestion are considered contributing factors as well. Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to managing PCOD and PCOS. The treatment typically involves a combination of dietary and lifestyle changes, herbal remedies, detoxification procedures (panchakarma), stress management techniques, and rejuvenation therapies. The aim is to restore the balance of doshas, eliminate toxins from the body, and regulate the hormonal functions.

Causes and symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and Polycystic Ovarian Disorder (PCOD):

It is believed that PCOD and PCOS are complex hormonal disorders that can have a significant impact on a woman's reproductive health and overall well-being. It is important to understand the causes and symptoms to find effective solutions. The exact causes of PCOD and PCOS are still not fully understood, but experts believe that a combination of genetic and environmental factors as well as insulin resistance play a role. Hormonal imbalance, especially an increase in androgens (male hormones), and the development of multiple small cysts on the ovaries are also major factors in these conditions. Symptoms of PCOD and PCOS can vary from woman to woman, but typically include irregular or absent menstruation, excessive hair growth (hirsutism), weight gain or difficulty losing weight, acne, and fertility problems. It is important to note that not all women with PCOD or PCOS experience the same symptoms, and some may experience only a few symptoms.

According to Ayurveda, the exact causes of PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) and PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) are still not very well known. However, there are some factors that are believed to contribute to the development of these conditions. One possible cause of PCOD and PCOS is said to be genetic. It is believed that certain genetic factors may make an individual more susceptible to developing these conditions. Insulin resistance is another factor that is often associated with PCOD and PCOS. Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels, and when the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin, it can lead to an imbalance in hormone levels and the development of PCOD and PCOS. Obesity is also considered a major cause of insulin resistance and may play a role in the development of PCOD and PCOS. Excess body weight can disrupt hormone balance and contribute to insulin resistance, which in turn can lead to PCOD and PCOS. It's important to note that these are general observations and that each individual's experience with PCOD and PCOS may vary. Ayurvedic practitioners may consider other factors such as lifestyle choices, dietary habits, and stress levels in their assessment and treatment approach.

PCOD is not the cause of a single anomaly in the body that can be pointed out, but rather a combination of a host of issues that develop over time inside the body. Space or Akash Mahabhuta is represented in the female body as the hollow space in the reproductive cavity. In the ovarian cycle, the Vata dosha is responsible for follicular movement, the rupturing of ovarian walls to release a mature ovum, and the movement of the finger-like projections (aka fimbriae) direct the mature ovum into the uterus through the fallopian tubes. On the other hand, Kapha provides nourishment to the uterus, helping in follicular growth and developing a fertilized egg in the fetus. Usually, there is an imbalance of Vata and Kapha dosha to blame when there is a disruption in healthy ovulation. What we call hormones are described in Ayurveda as the "fire" element within our body. Therefore, Pitta imbalance can be blamed for hormonal issues. An imbalanced Kapha has 'cold and sticky' qualities, which affects the digestive fire in the body, also known as Agni. This reduced digestive fire causes the body to produce Ama. Use ayurveda for hormonal imbalance. Ama production causes various improper enzymatic reactions and leads to a hormonal imbalance in the body, which causes hyperandrogenism. This ultimately impacts the metabolic rates of the tissues, also known as Dhatus. The Dhatus affected in PCOD is Rasa Dhatu, including lymph and plasma, Medha Dhatu, which makes up your Adipose tissue, and Artava Dhatu, which refers to the female reproductive system. Hence, the Ayurvedic treatment of PCOD is centered around balancing the doshas in PCOD patients.

Diagnosis and treatment options in Ayurveda:

When it comes to the diagnosis of PCOD and PCOS, Ayurveda takes a holistic approach that considers not only the symptoms but also the individual's overall constitution and imbalances. Ayurvedic practitioners use various techniques such as pulse diagnosis, physical examination, and detailed history-taking to assess the root cause of the disorder. Once the diagnosis is made, Ayurveda offers a range of treatment options. The primary objective of Ayurvedic treatment is to restore balance and harmony in the body by addressing the underlying imbalances that contribute to PCOD and PCOS. This is achieved through a combination of dietary changes, herbal supplements, detoxification therapies, stress management techniques, and lifestyle modifications.

Lifestyle changes and dietary recommendations for managing PCOD and PCOS:

In addition to herbal supplements and detoxification therapies, adopting certain lifestyle changes and making specific dietary modifications are crucial in managing PCOD and PCOS. Ayurveda recognizes the profound impact that lifestyle factors and diet have on hormonal balance and overall health. One of the most important lifestyle changes recommended by Ayurveda is to establish a consistent daily routine, including regular sleep patterns and mealtimes. This helps regulate the body's natural rhythms and supports hormonal balance. Engaging in regular exercise, such as yoga or brisk walking, can also be beneficial for managing PCOD and PCOS by improving metabolism and reducing stress levels. In terms of diet, Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of consuming fresh, whole foods and avoiding processed, refined, and junk foods. Foods that are high in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, are encouraged as they promote better digestion and help regulate blood sugar levels. It is also beneficial to include healthy fats, such as ghee and coconut oil, in the diet as they support hormone production.

How Ayurveda Can Cure It?

PCOD is a serious condition to be in, but nothing can not be treated or prevented with Ayurveda. PCOD treatment in ayurveda recommends treating PCOD with a combination of Kriyas, Oushadha, Aahara, and Vihara, which are mostly PCOS ayurvedic home remedies.

Aahara: This is one of the PCOS ayurvedic home remedies. Diet deserves much attention when we talk about PCOD and how ayurveda can cure it. These herbs are useful for PCOD treatment in ayurveda as they have a hormone balancing, insulin enhancing, obstruction clearing, and Kapha reducing effect. This is essential when talking about PCOD and how ayurveda can cure it.

Kriya: This refers to a host of Shodhana therapies. Many of these therapies like Basthi and Virechana are great parts of PCOD and how ayurveda can cure it, e.g., Shathavaryadi, Guduchyadi Rasayana Vasti, and Anuvasana Vasti.

Ayurvedic herbs and remedies for improving hormonal imbalance:

In Ayurvedic medicine, various herbs and remedies have been used for centuries to support hormonal balance and manage PCOD and PCOS. These natural solutions work by addressing the root causes of hormonal imbalances and promoting overall well-being.

Ashwagandha is One commonly recommended herb, which is known for its adaptogenic properties. It helps reduce stress levels, improve energy levels, and regulate cortisol, a hormone often imbalanced in PCOD and PCOS.

Shatavari is another powerful herb, which supports female reproductive health and hormonal balance. It helps regulate menstrual cycles, reduce menstrual pain, and improve fertility.

Triphala, a combination of three fruits, is often used to support digestion and detoxification. It helps remove ama (toxins) from the body, which can contribute to hormonal imbalances. Additionally, herbs like Turmeric and Cinnamon are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce inflammation associated with PCOD and PCOS.

Cinnamon deserves a mention when talking about PCOD and how ayurveda can cure it. Harvested from Cinnamon tree's bark, Cinnamon is more than just a taste-enhancing spice. Cinnamon is known to positively impact insulin resistance parameters in PCOD patients and regulate menstrual cycles for them. This makes it a great mention for PCOD treatment in ayurveda.

Turmeric helps towards PCOD treatment in ayurveda. Tumeric's active ingredient is curcumin, which is where it gets its signature yellow color. Curcumin has shown promising results to decrease insulin resistance and as an anti-inflammatory agent in several PCOD related studies.

Importance of stress management in dealing with PCOD and PCOS:

In addition to exploring ayurvedic remedies, stress management is also a crucial component in dealing with PCOD and PCOS from an Ayurvedic perspective. Stress can have a significant impact on hormonal balance, exacerbating the symptoms of these conditions. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize stress reduction techniques to support overall well-being.

Practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can be highly beneficial in reducing stress levels. These practices help activate the body's relaxation response, calming the mind and reducing the production of stress hormones.

Another valuable tool in stress management is self-care. Engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation, such as taking leisurely baths, spending time in nature, or indulging in hobbies, can significantly contribute to reducing stress levels.

Furthermore, Ayurvedic treatments like Abhyanga (a warm oil massage) and Shirodhara (a gentle pouring of warm oil over the forehead) are known for their ability to soothe the nervous system, relieve tension, and promote deep relaxation.
